An Interview with Dr. Somyata Somendra

What inspired you to choose cardiology as your specialty?

My interest in cardiology began during medical school when I realized how central the heart is to our overall health—and how timely intervention can literally save lives. I was drawn to the blend of rapid decision-making and long-term patient care it demands.

You topped India in the PGIMER DM Cardiology exam. How did you prepare for such a competitive milestone?

It was a combination of consistency, clarity, and passion. I focused on core cardiology concepts, stayed disciplined with daily goals, and continuously tested myself. But above all, I was genuinely curious and motivated to grow.

You’ve performed over 1200 cardiac procedures. What would you say is your area of deepest expertise?

I specialize in complex coronary interventions—particularly CTOs, bifurcations, and left main angioplasties. I also have significant experience in device therapy like pacemakers and CRTs, and structural heart interventions like TAVR and TEER.

Many patients fear angioplasty. How do you comfort and guide them?

I believe in honest, compassionate communication. I explain the condition and treatment in simple terms, share success stories, and reassure them that they’re in safe, experienced hands.

You’ve trained in Singapore and Hong Kong. How has international exposure shaped your practice?

It’s helped me stay at the forefront of global best practices. Being part of international case discussions and learning advanced imaging techniques has enhanced my precision and decision-making.
